Bills Bio

Bill  Sawalich was drawn to photography at an early age.

After completing his first darkroom class at the tender age of 10, he continued

his photographic education and ultimately earned a Bachelor’s Degree from

Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois and a Master's Degree from

The Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California.

He graduated from Brooks with Honors, a member of the President’s List.

 

Sawalich’s first professional photography assignment came as a lowly copy editor

at Petersen Publishing in Los Angeles. The magazine publisher recognized his affinity

for photography and he learned by doing—photographing products in a makeshift

studio and capturing fast-paced motorsports and bicycle action in his free time.

He is currently the manager of photography at Barlow Productions in St. Louis,

a commercial photography studio specializing in people photographs for

advertising, editorial and corporate uses.

 

A former Features Editor for two national photography magazines

-Outdoor Photographer and PC Photo- Sawalich remains a contributing editor

at the two magazines, as well as at Digital Photo Pro.

 

His work has also appeared in Petersen’s Photographic, The British Journal of Photography,

digitalFOTO magazine and CNET Networks. In addition to profiling modern masters of photography

and writing equipment reviews and how-to articles, Sawalich also writes a monthly Pro Tips column

for Digital Photo Pro and a series of weekly photo tips for PCPhotoMag.com

 

An amateur filmmaker and creative writer, Sawalich is a founding partner of micro-independent film studio

Lackluster Pictures, and his short stories have been published in McSweeney’s Internet Tendency and

Yankee Pot Roast online.

 

As a photography writer, his education continues on a monthly basis as he profiles modern masters such as

Rolfe Horn, Howard Schatz and Timothy Greenfield-Sanders.

 

Sawalich’s photographs have exhibited in universities and private galleries around the country, and

are held in private collections. They can also be seen in editorial and advertising uses nationwide for clients

including Anheuser Busch, MasterCard, Monsanto, Solutia, Spectrum Brands, Vanguard Investments, and

in his online portfolio at www.sawalich.com.

 

Sawalich lives in the Shaw neighborhood of St. Louis with his two dogs, Hazel and Myra.
